`Prices to come down, post-VAT'

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Commercial Taxes Commissioner, Mr V. Somasundaram, has said that the commodity process will generally look down subsequent to implementation of the value added tax (VAT) regime in the State.

Reports reaching from various quarters suggest that the reduction in price has already come about in medicines, readymade garments and PVC pipes. Mr Somasundaram said he expected to see a clearer picture of the post-VAT price regime to emerge within a period of 30 days.

Fruits and vegetables do not attract tax. Sugar, which was devoid of tax, will continue to be so under the VAT regime. VAT will have a favourable impact on industries as well, Mr Somasundaram said.
