INDIA and China have agreed to not only consider a "significant enhancement" of traffic rights from the current level of seven flights a week, but also agreed to review the clause, which allows only a dual designation of airlines presently allowed to fly between India and China.

This emerged at the conclusion of talks between officials of India and China here on Thursday. The move to turn the dual designation of airlines to a multiple designation should open opportunities for all the designated airlines from India, including the two private sector airlines — Jet Airways and Air Sahara — to look at operating flights to China.

Besides, the two sides felt that there is also a need to increase the points of call in both the countries (currently restricted to two) as well as the number of intermediate and beyond points for the airlines.

The move should help the designated airlines of India decide on the cities where they would like to stop while flying to China.

The meeting also agreed to review other issues, including liberalisation of code share rights, cargo services and operation by dry-leased aircraft to meet the demand for greater connectivity.
