Airlines IA seeks nod for flights to Birmingham, Manchester Our Bureau
New Delhi , March 15 INDIAN Airlines, which has already been designated for operations to the UK, has requested permission to operate four flights a week to Birmingham and three flights a week to Manchester from December this year, the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, said on Tuesday. Replying to a question raised in the Rajya Sabha on whether IA was not allowed to bid for the operations on the Delhi-London and Mumbai-London routes, Mr Patel said: "IA has only requested permission to operate four flights per week to Birmingham and three flights per week to Manchester effective December 2005." The recently concluded air services bilateral between India and the UK saw the number of direct weekly flights that can be operated by designated airlines to the two nations increase to 40. Earlier, the airlines were allowed to operate only 19 direct weekly flights on the route. The Government has already allowed the two private sector airlines - Jet Airways and Air Sahara - to operate nine times a week to London. Besides, Air India, which already operates to London, has also been given permission to operate six more flights a week on the sector.
