Airlines introduce flash rates for garment exports

Our Bureau

Chennai , March 15

AIRLINES have introduced express or flash rates to cash in on the surge in garment exports and the scarcity of cargo space.

According to sources, some airlines are accepting cargo only on express rates. The surge in garment export volumes is seasonal and is not consistent enough for airlines to bring in dedicated space.

Most of the exporters are under pressure to meet deadlines and are willing to pay more rather than lose important orders or incur demurrage in case the consignment is delayed.

Exporters are also not willing to ship high value cargo by sea because of frequent go-slows at the Chennai Port.

The flash rates to Canada and US are about Rs 200 per kg while the normal tariff to these destinations is about Rs 147.
