APSRTC staff withdraw strike call

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , March 15

THE employees of the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) have decided not to go ahead with the strike call. This decision comes in the wake of the Government agreeing to look into issues such as reducing motor vehicle tax and reimbursing huge outflows in the form of concessions.

The strike was to begin on Wednesday. The representatives of the employees held three-hour long discussions with the management here on Tuesday to deliberate on their demands.

Mr S. Santosh Reddy, Transport Minister, agreed to rationalise the motor vehicle (MV) tax payable by the Corporation. The employees contended that the corporation paid 12.5 per cent for rural services and 10 per cent on urban services against six per cent and three per cent; and five per cent and two per cent in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, respectively.

The Government would work on the rate of the tax soon.

With regard to the reimbursement of concessions extended to different sections of society by the State Government, the Minister assured that a decision would be taken in a month on making the education department share the burden of concessions extended to students. The Government also assured that the remaining would be reimbursed.

Addressing presspersons later, the Minister said the Government was committed to protect the interests of the Corporation that owned largest fleet of buses.

Mr Gone Prakash Rao, RTC Chairman, and Mr P. Gautam Kumar, Managing Director of the Corporation, represented the management, while the Union President, Mr B. Rama Rao, and Secretary-General, Mr Raja Rammohan Rao, took part in deliberations on behalf of the employees.
