GM expands Halol plant capacity

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI: General Motors India has expanded the annual production capacity of its Halol facility in Gujarat by almost two-and-a-half times from 25,000 to 60,000 units to meet the growing demand for its Chevrolet and Opel brand of vehicles.

With the commissioning of the new capacity in three shifts, the company hopes to quickly clear the backlog of Chevrolet Tavera. The multi-utility vehicle had crossed the 10,000-car milestone in January, within seven months of its mid-2004 launch and there is a three-month wait list for it.

"Our Halol plant is fully geared up to produce up to 80,000 units or more in three shifts if need be," said Mr Aditya Vij, President and Managing Director, General Motors India, noting that with the sale of over 26,000 cars in calendar year 2004 the company recorded an 73 per cent annual growth.

General Motors has also recently announced benefits of up to Rs 58,000 on purchases of its popular Chevrolet and Opel brands of cars during March.
