Many hospitals do not follow waste disposal rules: Fedcot survey

Our Bureau

Madurai , March 8

THE Federation of Consumer Organisations of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry (Fedcot) has found, in a survey conducted by it, that still many hospitals in the State do not follow waste disposal rules. It has urged the Government to strictly enforce the provisions of the Bio-medical Waste Management And Handling Rules, 1998.

The survey report released in Tiruchi by the Fedcot Chairman, Mr Duraisingham, said that of the 205 hospitals including 57 government hospitals surveyed, majority were found to practise hazardous disposal methods. However, the paramedical and support staff of the hospitals lacked awareness on the rules relating to bio-medical waste. The public also proved no better in the understanding of the hazards posed by improper disposal of waste. As per the survey, 57 private and 23 government hospitals do not have any facility to handle waste. Nearly 77 private hospitals and 35 government hospitals practised incineration of waste, which has been banned.

A state conference of FEDCOT will be held at Tiruchi on May 28 and 29, the sources said.
