A tall claim

I read with interest the statement of the IT Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu that one million jobs in IT sector will be created in Tamil Nadu by 2009.

The unemployment scenario is a serious issue in India and there are a lot of unsubstantiated claims being made.

Recently, Anna University widely publicised its campus interview for students, when hardly 200 of then were offered employment. This is a negligible figure compared to the 50,000 engineering students passing out every year in Tamil Nadu alone.

The government should take stock of the seriousness of the unemployment situation and make a careful assessment of the scenario. One million jobs for IT professionals in Tamil Nadu alone in four years, which means 2.5 lakh every year, is a far-fetched claim.
