The Hindu Business Line : Untapped seaweed wealth in coastal TN

MADURAI: The coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, largely considered backward, have an untapped seaweed wealth worth Rs 2,000 crore, according to the Acquaculture Foundation of India (AFI).

The shallow waters of the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait can provide livelihood to one lakh fisherfolks in the ten districts.

The AFI President, Mr Sakthivel, said seaweed is a valuable source of raw material for health food, medicine, pharmaceutical products, textiles, fertilisers and animal feed.

Scientists of AFI, M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute and the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute are attending a two-day meeting in Mandapam to discuss seaweed cultivation and environment-related issues.
