Airlines Alliance Air flies to 9 N.E. destinations despite stir Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb. 17 ALLIANCE Air, the 100 per cent subsidiary of Indian Airlines, today operated flights to nine of the 11 stations in the North-East to which it has regular flights, even as a section of pilots continued their agitation. An airline spokesman said that while no flights were operated with the smaller ATR aircraft for the third consecutive day, Alliance Air was operating Boeing 737 aircraftto ensure that connectivity is maintained in the region. "The two stations to which we could not operate were Lilabari and Shillong. We could not operate due to technical reasons — a Boeing 737 cannot land at these airports," the spokesman added. However, passengers were being advised to fly to Dibrugarh and Guwahati respectively from where the two airports to which Alliance was not operating could be reached within two hours by road. Alliance has a mixed fleet of Boeing 737 and ATR aircraft. The ATR pilots have launched an agitation as a result of which flights being flown with these 48-seater aircraft have not been operated. Official sources said a high-powered committee which includes two Deputy Managing Directors of Alliance Air has already been set up to negotiate with the ATR pilots. The pilots have already had one round of talks with the management. The agitation is for better working conditions and permanency, some of the agitating staff said. At present all the Alliance staff is on contract.
