Rlys tops revenue target for Apr-Jan at Rs 37,827 cr

New Delhi , Feb. 15

WITH the Budget round the corner, the Indian Railways is right on track this year in terms of meeting its revenue target, having recorded a total revenue of Rs 37,826.62 crore for the period April '04-January '05. This is Rs 1,179.4 crore more than the budgeted target for the period.

Importantly, the operating expenditure for the period appears to be in control with the Railways overspending by Rs 173.49 crore or 0.63 per cent over the allocated Rs 27,715.12 crore.

The total earnings, which include income from passenger and freight transportation, other coaching and sundries, are 3.22 per cent above the budget estimate of Rs 36,647.22 crore. As compared to the total revenue of Rs 25,672.88 crore recorded during the same period last financial year, earnings are 8.3 per cent higher this fiscal.

While earnings from transporting passengers and freight and sundry income such as lease and ground rent has gone up for the period, there has been a decline in income from other coaching activities that include earnings from transporting parcel luggage, postal and catering services.

The increase in revenues has been driven by freight earnings of Rs 24,764.93 crore, which is up 5.01 per cent from the targeted Rs 23,584.18 crore.

Similarly, income from transporting passengers has crossed the target marginally by Rs 34.76 crore at Rs 11,537.23 crore, informed Railway officials. While freight earnings accounted for 65.47 per cent of the total earnings, income from passenger transportation accounted for 30.5 per cent of the same during the period.

For January, the total earnings are at Rs 3,926.97 crore, which is 2.37 per cent over the budget estimate. During the month, while the freight revenues crossed the target of Rs 2,563.13 crore by Rs 128.58 crore, the income from passenger transportation fell short of meeting its target of Rs 1,114.49 crore by Rs 17 crore.
