Taxation Panel set up to suggest norms for service tax on transport agencies Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb. 11 THE Government has set up a committee to suggest modalities for collection of service tax on goods transport agency services in situations where registered partnership firms are involved as either the consignor or consignee of the goods and are liable to pay freight for the transportation of goods by road in a goods carriage. The Committee has also been asked to suggest any other measures for smooth and effective implementation of service tax levy on the goods transport agency services, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), an association of traders, said on Friday in a statement. Mr S. Chandra, who was recently appointed as the Director General of Central Economic Intelligence Bureau, would be the Chairman of the Committee. Besides senior officials of Finance Ministry, the committee would also comprise representatives of traders and transporters. According to Mr Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General of CAIT, the committee would have to submit its report/recommendations by February 28, 2005. The first meeting of the committee is to be held on February 15 and 16.
