Chennai , Feb. 7

THE Tuticorin Port Trust's plan to develop the outer harbour at a cost of Rs 2,150 crore has been approved by the Government and included in the National Maritime Development Programme.

This project is part of the port trust's various development initiatives to capitalise on the growth in container traffic. The outer harbour would have a draft of 14 to 16 metres for container handling and bulk cargo with private sector participation, according to a TPT press release. The TPT is preparing a feasibility report on the project, which is the first step towards seeking Government approval taking up this project under BOT (build, operate and transfer), and it would be ready in three months, the release said.

The tender documents for conversion of berth eight into a container berth have been prepared and will be placed before TPT board of trustees for approval. However, the conversion will be completed only after berth nine is available for handling general cargo, the release said.
