New Mangalore port posts record January traffic

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Feb. 2

THE New Mangalore port handled a record traffic of 27.15 million tonnes at the end of January against 20.85 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year.

With this, the port crossed the total traffic of 26.67 million tonnes handled during 2003-04.

A press release by the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) said here that the growth rate is 30.21 per cent over last year and 19.57 per cent over the target fixed by the Union Shipping Ministry.

The growth in volume of traffic is due to the increased handling of iron ore fines, iron ore lumps, and POL crude and products.

The port handled 4.16 million tonnes of iron ore fines and lumps till the end of January (0.6 million tonnes).

The port handled a record number of 91 vessels in January surpassing the earlier record of handling 88 vessels in December, the release added.
