Polar Air Cargo pulls out of India

Nina Varghese

Chennai , Feb. 2

POLAR Air Cargo, the airfreight carrier, has pulled out of India and has started operations in China, according to airport sources.

The airline received a formal nod from the US Government to operate flights to China under the US-China aviation agreement signed last year.

According to the airline's Web site, the airline will fly nine weekly frequencies to Shanghai from different points in the US.

The airline opted for China as the Chinese market was seen to be a more profitable one, sources said.

The airline used to operate three 747-200 freighters on the Dubai-Mumbai-Chennai-Dubai sector.

The airline pulled out one freighter in May 2004 followed by the more recent complete withdrawal of services.

The airline carries about 400 tonnes of cargo a month out of Chennai, including trucked cargo from Bangalore.

With the withdrawal of services, the Chennai market, which is made up of ready-made garments, leather and leather products, has lost a direct link with the US.
