Paradip port gets nod to handle petroleum products

Kolkata , Feb. 1

WITH Chief Controller of Explosives having accorded his approval, Paradip port is now all geared to handle petroleum products, both Class A and B types, at its oil jetty.

It is nearly two years now that the civil construction of the jetty was completed at a cost of Rs 50 crore, but it has remained idle so far.

Paradip Port Trust sources indicate that the jetty should start handling Class B products such as diesel within a week or so as the gangway, as demanded by the Indian Oil Corporation, the major user of the jetty, is ready and will be installed within the next few days.

The handling of the Class A products such as motor spirit and crude may take some more time to start. The construction of the 11-km long pipeline connecting the jetty with the IOC's tankage too is complete. The pipeline network, it is informed, has also received the approval of CCE.

Right now, PPT handles small quantities of Class B products at its south quay.

In 2003-04, the throughput was around 1.4 million tonnes. The throughput this year is likely to be less than one mt. Till December last year, it was less than seven lakh tonnes.

The drop in throughput is attributed to the drop in imports as well as coastal traffic.

PPT sources indicate that it will not allow IOC to utilise the south quay once the oil jetty is ready for operation. IOC has indicated to export naphtha through Paradip, it is learnt.
