The Hindu Business Line : SriLankan Air plans freighter service to Coimbatore, Pune

While operations to Coimbatore are expected to commence in March, the operations to Pune are expected to follow soon afterwards. SriLankan Airlines currently operates a six-times-a-week freighter service to Bangalore. Its freighter service to Chennai has been temporarily suspended, as the airline is currently operating with larger capacity A-330 passenger aircraft into the city.

The A-330s, which have been pressed into service to meet the higher demand during the winter season, have a cargo carrying capacity of 12-15 tonnes, almost the same as their AN-12 freighters, which have a capacity of 15 tonnes.

The airline is also considering upgrading its freighter services to A-300 or A-310 flights soon, Mr Madhavan said. According to him, the airline hopes to service a diverse clientele including automobile manufacturers, agri-machinery makers and pharmaceutical companies out of Pune.

Currently, exporters based in the town, have to transport their goods to Mumbai, from where the consignments are flown out on their passenger aircraft. The freight-carrying capacity of passenger aircraft is restricted by the fact that they cannot carry very heavy consignments, nor can they accommodate odd-shaped packages on account of a smaller door on these aircraft.
