Roadways Road safety programme in Kerala Our Bureau
This is sought to be achieved through the active involvement of teachers, parents and the local community, according to Dr T. Elangovan, Director, Natpac. The `Safe Road to School' (SRS) project is planned in such a manner as to reduce the risk, incidence and severity of injuries to students who form a part of the traffic system either as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists or commuters. The programme has been conceptualised in the wake of mounting accidents in the State, especially in the vicinity of schools. On an average, 112 accidents occur in the State on a daily basis, Dr Elangovan said. Kerala may be housing no more than three per cent of vehicular population in the country, but its share in accidents is as high as eight per cent, he pointed out.
