WITH exports of electronics and computer software services notching a 33-per cent growth rate during 2003-04, the Union Minister for IT and Communications, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, has expressed confidence that India was on track to achieve the export target of $50 billion by 2008.

"During the year 2003-04, exports of electronics and computer software service touched $14.28 billion, showing a growth rate of nearly 33 per cent in dollar terms. If this trend continues, we are confident of achieving the export target of $50 billion by 2008," Mr Maran said on Tuesday, addressing an interactive session with the ambassadors of various countries under the `Hosted Buyers Programme' of the upcoming Indiasoft 2005 conference and exhibition.

Lauding the quality of software services offered by Indian companies, Mr Maran said out of 117 companies in the world classified as SEI-CMM Level 5 certified, 80 were based in India.

Noting that 90 per cent of exports were to the North American and European markets, while exports to Latin America, CIS countries and Africa stood at a mere $4.90 million, $0.45 million and $154.63 million respectively, Mr Maran said these regions should work closely with India to share the benefits of the country's IT strengths.

Indiasoft 2005 will be held for the first time in Chennai on March 21 and 22. It will offer an opportunity to entrepreneurs from various countries to interact with Indian software companies and explore the possibilities of strategic alliances and joint ventures.
