ZSI study on tsunami impact on marine system

THE Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has undertaken a survey along the Indian Coast starting from Gulf of Mannar, to study the impact of tsunami on marine eco-system, including reef and mangroves.
According to the Joint Director of ZSI, Dr K. Venkatraman, the assessment would be made in four stages, covering Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the report would be submitted to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests at every stage.
Speaking at Tuticorin, Dr Venkatraman, who is also the Member-Secretary of the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), said that the draft notification to establish a State biodiversity board in Tamil Nadu is in place and the board would become functional soon.
A one-time grant of Rs 10 lakh would be given by the NBA to establish the board. It would monitor the biodiversity of the State through management committees.
The Biological Diversity Act introduced by the Centre in 2002, has been an able mechanism to preserve the biodiversity, regulation of access to biological resources and protection and rehabilitation of threatened species, he added.
