Coimbatore , Jan. 24

BHARAT Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has brought the Internet service closer to the people in Coimbatore district by offering broadband service at a low monthly charge of Rs 500 under its home plan.

BSNL, which rolled out the service on Monday in Tirupur and Coimbatore, expects to provide this facility to 10,000 subscribers - both home users and commercial users - before the end of the current financial year.

Speaking to newspersons today, Mr R. Varadarajan, Principal General Manager (PGM), Telecom, BSNL, Coimbatore, said that the response from the subscribers in Tirupur was so overwhelming that the booking had crossed the capacity to provide the service in the hosiery town even before the formal launch of the service. BSNL expects to invest Rs 2 crore to provide the targeted connection before March this year.

Explaining the advantages of the `Dataone' broadband Internet service being offered by BSNL, he said the service was based on the latest Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line 2+ (ADSL 2+) technology and the subscribers have the advantage of using telephone and Internet simultaneously. The Internet would always be on and there would be no need for a dialup. The billing for the Internet service would be included in the normal phone billing.

He said initially, the service has been provided in Ramnagar telephone exchange area in Coimbatore and in Tirupur main telephone exchange and this would be progressively extended to other areas in Coimbatore and Tirupur besides Pollachi and Udamalpet.

BSNL would also provide other services such as video conferencing, video-on-demand etc in phases. The service could be availed in 36 exchanges in the district. Coimbatore and Tirupur are the second and third cities in Tamil Nadu where the `Dataone' service has been launched by BSNL in Tamil Nadu after Chennai.

Mr Varadarajan said there were four monthly slabs under the Home Plan ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 3,300 and the bandwidth available ranged from 256 Kbps to 1Mbps. The download/upload limit under Home Plan was from 1GB to 10 GB and free e-mail ID facility also would be available.

Under the Business Plan, the monthly charges would be in the range of Rs 1,200 to Rs 9,000 and the bandwidth available would range from 256 Kbps to 2 Mbps. The download/upload limit was in the 4 GB-40 GB range.

Answering a question, he said for a monthly charge of Rs 500, a subscriber could access the Internet for about 68 hours. As an incentive to customers under both Home Plan and Business Plan, additional usage charges (Rs/Mb) beyond the free download/upload limits would be waived up to June 30, 2005 if they joined the service prior to March 31, 2005. To enable the customers have a feel of the service after commissioning, customers would be provided with free service till January 31 and billing commences from Feb 1, 2005.
