Shipping MMD e-initiative to benefit seafarers, shipping firms Our Bureau
Mumbai Jan. 18 THE Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) at Mumbai is at the threshold of entering the electronic age, with the implementation of the enterprise level e-governance programme. Developed by a consortium of HCL Infosystems Ltd and Applied Research International Pvt Ltd, the project, e-Jahaz, will benefit the shipping industry and the seafarers' community. Shipping companies would be able to submit online applications for registration of ships, creation and discharge of mortgages, surveys and inspections, plan approvals, issue of CLC safe manning documents, ISM audits and IMDC code compliance. They would also be able to verify online ship details, mortgage details, ship certificates and seafarers' certificate details on payment of fees. While maritime training institutes would be able to apply online for institute and course approvals, seafarers would be able to update their entire career profile, view exam schedules/results and apply for examinations. The software would also automate the workflows within MMD and with the Directorate General of Shipping to enable faster processing of all applications. The MMD will have a new Web site, where details of all services provided by the department would be available.
