New Delhi , Jan. 15

IND-Swift Laboratories Ltd has commenced commercial production in its new FDA compliant manufacturing facility in Derabassi, Punjab, in order to tap the regulated markets.

This is in addition to the existing approvable macrolides facility, which is due for FDA inspection in early 2005. The new facility will facilitate the filing of the four drug master files (DMFs) in US which will enable the company to participate in the $10-billion opportunity by 2006-08.

This Greenfield project has been completed in a record time of seven months against the normal period of one to one-and-half-years taken for commissioning of the facilities of similar nature. The three other new facilities that are under implementation, at a cost of $15 million, are also expected to be completed ahead of their scheduled commissioning date and are expected to commence commercial production by March-April.

The new facility has been put up at a cost of $4 million and is a part of $22-million expansion plan of the company. The company hopes to file 20-25 DMFs by 2007-08, as drugs worth $84 billion goes off-patent.
