Grain trade to go on indefinite bandh in Maharashtra

MUMBAI: The Federation of Maharashtra Foodgrain Dealers' Association and Poona Merchants' Chamber have decided to stop loading and unloading of goods across the State from Friday.

The Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM) has also given a call for an indefinite bandh of traders all over State from January 21 till liability of paying service tax on gross freight charges by traders, whether on consignee or consignor, is totally revoked, according to FAM officials.

A Central Government notification says that the burden of payment of service tax on goods transport at 10 per cent plus 2 per cent education cess thereon from January 1, 2005 was shifted from the service provider i.e., transport operators to customer, consignor and consignee (traders).
