Apparel training centre opening in Tirupur

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore , Jan. 6

FOR the Apparel Export Promotion Council, as the export quota management job becomes redundant with the removal of quotas this year, managing apparel training and design centres (ATDC) offers new scope.

The sixth ATDC will be set up this month in Tirupur. Already, five ATDCs are functioning in the country, which include those in Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore.

The ATDC coming up in Tirupur is to be located at Avanashi, near Tirupur for which the AEPC has bought a one acre-site (it has taken over a defunct engineering unit at Avanashi in whose premises the new centre will operate.)

The Tirupur ATDC, to be developed as an exclusive knitwear industry-oriented training and design centre, will start offering five training courses to start with in knitting technology, production, supervisory and quality control, designing and pattern making, sewing machine and stitching practicing (barring the first two which will be long term courses, the rest are short term courses).

According to AEPC sources, the Tirupur ATDC, to be inaugurated on January 9, is expected to commence courses from February and the centre would sport all latest machinery/equipment needed for the training.

The Union Textile Minister, Mr Shankarsinh Vaghela, who is scheduled to take part in the opening of the Nethaji Apparel Park, the country's first private initiative in apparel park projects, on January 9 will formally inaugurate the ATDC too on that day.

The knitwear service centre that was running under the joint effort of the AEPC and South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) in Tirupur for the last nine years or so has given way to the new ATDC and with the formation of the Tirupur ATDC, the AEPC-SITRA service centre would merge with the ATDC, the sources added.
