Deep-sea tuna fishing — Vizag fishermen against deploying foreign vessels

Taiwan trawlers lined up at the Visakhapatnam fishing harbour — C.V. Subrahmanyam

Visakhapatnam , Jan. 6

THE arrival of five foreign (Taiwanese) trawlers here earlier this week has raised the hackles of local fishermen, already reeling under the impact of tsunami.

These vessels, it is presumed, are here for deep-sea tuna fishing.

The agitated fishermen are planning to launch a struggle against deploying foreign vessels.

The trawlers, built in Taiwan, are manned by Taiwanese as well as Indians.

``The deployment of foreign vessels directly by foreign companies or their partners in India has a come as a rude shock to local fishermen. Fishermen are hit hard by the drastic slump in prices of fish and shrimp,'' Mr Ch. Satyanarana Murthy, General Secretary of the Visakha Dolphin Boat Operators' Welfare Association, said.

The UPA Government should make its stand clear on the issue and allay the apprehensions of traditional fishermen, he demanded.

He said his association was holding talks with the AP Mechanised Boat Operators' Association (APMBOA) on the threat posed by alien vessels.

Mr P.C. Appa Rao, President of the APMBOA, has said that already the jetty was overcrowded and the foreign vessels were making matters worse.

"The local trawler operators are also getting ready for tuna fishing by modifying their vessels. There is no necessity for allowing foreign operators,'' he said.

Some of the local trawler operators are making efforts of late to undertake deep-sea fishing for tuna.

They are planning to tie up with a Chennai-based exporter to export tuna to Japan and other countries.
