Packaged water units' plea
Our Correspondent
MADURAI: The Central and State Governments should standardise the prices and ensure transparency in norms, the manufacturers of packaged drinking water with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Certification, have urged.
According to Mr Francis Bastiyan, Trustee of the newly formed Indian Institute of Drinking Water Management Services, a non-government organisation, to train entrepreneurs, the BIS norms, while unclear, are hampering the functioning of the units. There are over 1,300 small-scale units in the industry and 334 licensed units are in Tamil Nadu.
Another Trustee, Mr R. Ravishankar said that the units have informally been asked by the department to cease sale through sachets and jerry cans. These units have been asked to pack water in bubble top cans made of polycarbonate and polyethylene tetra phthalate materials, for selling which the licence is with a corporate major, he noted.
