Minister urges power distribution cos to adopt global best practices

New Delhi , Dec. 16

THE Union Minister of Power, Mr P.M. Sayeed, has urged State-owned utilities and private distribution companies to adopt international best practices for quality and reliable power supply to consumers.

``Though our progress in generation has been very good in recent years, the equally crucial area of distribution has been left behind. We have a long way to go to match international standards'', he told a workshop on `Best practices in distribution sector' here.

The average plant load factor (PLF) of power plants is likely to be over 75 per cent this year and performance benchmarks in generation were comparable to the best in the world. However, the distribution segment left much to be desired. To improve this sector, the focus of reforms in the last few years has been realigned on distribution and the Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme was one such scheme in that direction, he said.

According to the Minister, inadequately designed sub-stations, poor metering, bad billing and poor quality and reliability of power supply especially in rural areas were major areas of concern that were hampering the distribution segment.

Some State utilities and private operators have evolved international best practices in this segment and there is a need to replicate their success across the country. ``We have to benchmark best practices for improving the quality and reliability of supply and then proceed from national to international benchmarking'', he said.
