Cartoon Network okays worldwide telecast of 3D animated show

Mumbai , Nov. 16

TWENTY-six episodes of `Pet Alien', a 3D animated television show Crest Animation Studies is in the process of delivering to Mike Young Productions (MYP), has been approved for worldwide telecast by Cartoon Network.

The series is co-owned by Crest and MYP, an arrangement believed to be a first for the industry here in the 3D Computer Generated Imaging (CGI) space. The two companies are also working on another co-production, `Dive Olly Dive', likely ready for the market by mid-2006 and for which nine networks have signed pre-production contracts.

"This takes Crest into copyright ownership. That is where the real value of companies come from," Mr Mike Young, founder and CEO, MYP, said. His company shouldered two thirds of the production cost of `Pet Alien' amounting to $8-8.5 million.

The balance one third was taken up by Crest. Pre-production and post-production work is typically done out of US and Europe, the in-between phase being handled by studios like Crest. Outlining the importance of copyright ownership, Mr Young said that in Korea's 2D animation industry, survivors in the long run had been studios that bothered to own original work.

Besides, there is the classic case of Turner paying $500 million to buy the legendary US animation studio, Hanna Barbera, a deal in which $490 million went towards the library with only $10 million for the actual studio.

3D CGI has been gaining market fast. Retailing giant, Walmart, has decided to stock only 3D CGI videos, Mr Young said.
