Poverty trap

The trend of the rich becoming richer and the poor poorer only continues. And for "Getting out of the poverty trap" (Business Line, October 11) the vicious circle is to be broken. But the silver lining is the awareness about this. The defeat of the `India Shining' campaign in the last election proves this.

In the long term, however, success in asserting he rights of the underprivileged will depend on sustaining the pressure on the political classes and in rejecting fine phrases and promises for firm action.
