Our Correspondent

MADURAI: An indigenously developed prototype mobile reverse osmosis desalination plant, developed by the Hyderabad-based TATA Projects Ltd (TPL), has been put to operation at the technocrats colony of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project, near Tirunelveli.

According to the TPL Vice-President, Mr S.R. Raj, the plant with a capacity of 4,000 litres an hour, has passed factory trails with its compact, simple to operate and low energy consumption, through the model required further improvisation, to increase its capacity and reduction in capital cost.

The Rs 35 lakh desalination unit can be used in inland areas with problems such as high fluorides and nitrates and in coastal areas with high saline content in water.

With the optimisation of the process, it is claimed, that a litre of drinking water could be produced at just 4 paise to 5 paise, conforming to the World Health Organisation Standards, the sources added.
