E-Governance Industry & Economy - Income Tax Salaried I-T assessees can file e-returns in 60 cities K. R. Srivats
New Delhi , Oct. 2 SALARIED income-tax assessees in as many as 60 cities in the country, can now file their returns through the Internet. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has come up with a separate scheme for this purpose. This facility would be available from the assessment year 2004-05 onwards and Internet return of income would be processed on a priority basis, a revenue department official said. This scheme would, however, be available only if the returns are to be filed on or before the due date of filing of returns. Only individuals with permanent account numbers (PAN) and having income under the head `salaries' (but not having any income under the head `profits and gains of business or profession') can opt for this scheme. A person opting for this scheme would have to register himself with the Web site that has been designated by the e-Return administrator (a person appointed by the Board and not below the rank of Commissioner of Income-Tax) for this purpose. On registration, the eligible person would be allotted a user identification number and a password. By using this identification number and password, the returns can be filed on the Web site. The Tax Deduction at Source (TDS) certificate, if any, which has been signed digitally by the issuer, can also be attached electronically for the purpose of filing the return under this scheme.
