YSR concerned at dwindling forests

THE Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has expressed concern over dwindling forest resources in the State.
"Whenever I have flown over the forest area or driven through, I have found the numbers reducing and very few trees of more than 40-50 years in what are considered as forest areas in the State," Dr Reddy said, while inaugurating the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Journalism Department of the Osmania University, here today.
The greed of man and the indiscriminate felling of trees have caused serious problems. Similarly, environmental degradation is a big issue. He quoted the renowned agriculture scientist Dr M.S. Swaminathan to state that drought has become a common feature and areas not affected by them had to be searched.
Calling for a fresh thinking on conservation and more concern for environment, Dr Reddy said the media and journalists had a great role to play in these issues.
The Chief Minister also urged the media to give equal importance to positive developments. As an example, he cited the coverage given to one of the cases involving the former Prime Minister Mr P.V. Narasimha Rao, which he termed `negative', and was extensively covered by the media, but when he was absolved by the courts on the grounds that no charges were sound, the coverage was very little, Dr Reddy said.
