The Hindu Business Line : Delhi Metro on the `leadership' track

The Indian Administrative Services' (IAS) Academy, the Indian Army, the National Security Guard (NSG), an ADB-funded urban infrastructure project in Rajasthan, Rotary Clubs and a bevy of software companies are among those queuing up before the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for leadership and management sessions.

Buoyed by offers coming in from across the board, DMRC — which is executing the Rs 10,000-crore Metro rail project in the Capital — is setting up a consultancy wing to cater to the demand on a commercial basis.

"We have so far been providing the service free of cost. With increasing demand, we are looking at shifting to a commercial basis," a DMRC executive said.

The focus of DMRC's presentations to most of these groups has been on the management aspect of mega-construction projects and the importance of leadership.

The sessions, which are mostly presented by the DMRC's Managing Director, Mr E. Sreedharan, involve extensive interaction with the Metro project on a sustained basis.

For instance, a group of senior Army officers from the Long Defence Management Course, Secunderabad, would spend a full-day with the Metro personnel in October.

The course, which consists of senior officers of the rank of colonel and above, had sent a group to the Metro last year too.

Others among the Metro's varied customer base include an ADB-funded urban infrastructure project being implemented in six cities in Rajasthan by the State government.

A delegation from Rajasthan had come to learn about DMRC's project implementation strategies and mode of payments to contractors, among other things.

The Rail Staff College, Baroda, has also sent teams to DMRC to learn how the project is being implemented without delays and glitches.

There is also demand from institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, which has been sending students for technical training with DMRC.
