`Boston Scientific stents do well for Apollo Hospitals'

THIS year about one in four stents used in Apollo Hospitals' heart-related treatments were those of Boston Scientific's Taxus stents. All of Apollo's surgeries that involved Taxus were successful even as malfunctioning stents in the US led to Taxus being taken off the market.
Apollo "maybe lucky; I don't know," said Dr I. Sathyamurthy, Chief of Cardiology. Of the 467 stents inserted by the hospital this year, 119 were Taxus stents. Dr Sathyamurthy said that all the 119 stents were inserted without malfunctioning.
In the US, Taxus stents malfunctioned during the process of insertion, which eventually led to them being taken off the market by July this year. Dr Sathyamurthy said Boston Scientific's Indian office recalled Taxus stocks held by Apollo the same month.
A stent is a wire mesh tube that is used to keep a blood vessel open after widening it. A stent is placed in the human body through Angioplasty, a method used to open a closed blood vessel without having to perform a major surgery.
