Courts/Legal Issues Industry & Economy - Tobacco SC verdict on gutkha, pan masala Manufacturers hail ruling Our Bureau
New Delhi , Aug 2 PAN masala and gutkha manufacturers welcomed today's Supreme Court ruling lifting the ban imposed by some States on the sale of the two products. Mr Deepak Kothari, Managing Director of Kothari Products makers of Pan Parag said, "We have now got justice from the apex court. States which imposed the ban were openly discriminating against gutkha and pan masala manufacturers, despite these two products having very little or no tobacco at all." He said when products such as cigarettes, bidis and even khaini, which have much higher tobacco content, were allowed to be sold by the State Governments, it was discriminatory to ban gutkha and pan masala. Pan masala does not have any tobacco while gutkha has only a 10 per cent tobacco content, he said.
