Mumbai , July 16

IN a bid to showcase Indian gem and jewellery across the world, the Centre will allocate a `brand development support fund' for the industry in its foreign trade policy proposal to be tabled in few weeks.

"We have designated gem and jewellery as one of the focus areas of the foreign trade policy and we will initiate the branding of Indian jewellery by allocating funds for it," Mr Kamal Nath, Minister of Commerce and Industry, said here today.

Mr Nath was speaking at the India International Jewellery Show organised by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council.

Although he declined to quantify the size of the outlay for brand development for Indian jewellery, he pointed that the fund would be the first of its kind and would be a stepping stone for the industry to tread foreign shores as a brand.

While Indian gem and jewellery witnessed exports of $12 billion against a target of $13.5 billion last year, the Centre has set an export target of $15 billion for this year and a target of $20 billion to be achieved in the next three years, Mr Kamal Nath added.
