The project will be useful to the students and faculty of several disciplines such as plant sciences, mathematics, economics, sociology and artificial intelligence.

Hyderabad , June 30

THE University of Hyderabad plans to set up a super-computing facility over the period 2003-2007, with financial support to the tune of Rs 24.06 crore from the Union Ministry of Science and Technology.

The UoH has received the first instalment grant of Rs 8.58 crore under Phase-I. Work to install the system, to be acquired from the C-DAC, has been undertaken, with three IBM P690 Regetta servers procured. The required software would be brought separately.

The ownership of the high-performance servers and workstations acquired on lease would rest with the University.

The super-computing facility will come up at the Central Instrumentation Laboratory (CIL). However, once the separate structure for the Centre for Modelling, Simulation and Design (CMSD) is ready, the super-computer will move in there.

According to the University officials, the Rs 2-crore CMSD building, for which the former Union Minister for Science and Technology, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, laid the foundation in January 2004, has been allocated to the University of Hyderabad under the `Universities with Potential for Excellence' programme of the University Grants Commission.

The CMSD facility will get a full grant of Rs 7 crore. It will be useful to the students and faculty of several disciplines such as plant sciences, mathematics, economics, sociology and artificial intelligence to carry out simulation and modelling studies.

The CMSD hopes to facilitate cross-disciplinary studies, which could pave the way for new knowledge. The human resources generated from such efforts would be a future asset, it is believed.

The super-computer facility, on the other hand, is expected to boost the high-performance computing needs of the universities supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Under Phase-II of the super-computer project, a system consisting of 64 processors, with 128 GB RAM, would be added by the end of 2005. In Phase-III, the system would be further augmented and the project scheduled to be fully functional by 2007, the University officials said.
