'15,000 may come back for US visa renewal'

New Delhi , June 25

THE National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) has admitted that the new visa rules announced by US would mean an increase in time and cost of processing visas for technology companies in India, but urged players to bear with any inconvenience in this regard, in the larger interest of security.

"Nasscom understands that the new regulations will lead to an increase in the time and cost of processing visas for technology companies in India (and indeed all companies worldwide using these visas for their international staff in the US). However, that is an inconvenience that will have to be borne in the larger interest of security," said a Nasscom statement on Friday.

The association said it appreciated the reasons for the implementation of new visa processing procedures by the US as these were intended to enable the US government to better verify credentials of visitors to the country and to further strengthen homeland security in the US.

Nasscom said it would continue to work closely with appropriate authorities in India's largest trading partner country to ensure the smooth implementation of best practices in immigration and homeland security while minimising any inconvenience to individuals and corporations.

According to Nasscom, roughly 10,000-15,000 Indian IT professionals would have to return to India to get their visas renewed between July and September this year.

The US on Thursday announced that it has ceased domestic visa re-issuance services for certain categories of people, who would now have to return to their countries to get their visas renewed at the American consulates.
