EAN India Ltd, the organisation under the Ministry of Commerce, responsible for the barcoding standards that go onto products, plans a drive to extend barcodes to the health sector. To begin with, it will target the management of blood banks.
Mr Ravi Mathur, CEO, EAN India, speaking to newspersons here, said a key element in blood management relates to unique identification of blood products, the donor and the blood bank, and record maintenance and information transmission with accuracy and uniformity across the blood supply chain. This, he said, could be ensured by barcoding as it would enable efficient collection, storage and distribution of blood products.
Mr Mathur said that EAN is working with state blood councils to interest them in a barcoding initiative for their network of blood banks. EAN is also working with the Apollo Hospitals chain to barcode its entire process and the supplies that it buys.
