Accidents Govt seeks extradition of former Union Carbide chairman Our Bureau
New Delhi , Dec. 19 ALMOST 19 years after the tragic Bhopal gas incident occurred, the Government has forwarded to the US Government a request for extradition of Mr Warren Anderson, who was the Chairman of Union Carbide Corporation when the infamous Bhopal gas leak occurred. This information was given by the Minister of State for Chemicals & Fertilizers, Dr Chhattra Pal Singh, in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. It may be recalled that almost 8,000 people (three times more than the officially announced figure) died in 1984 when the poisonous methyl isocyanide leaked out of the storage tanks of Union Carbide Corporation in 1984. At that time the company was owned by the US-based Union Carbide, which was later bought out by the Calcutta-based B.N. Khaitan group. The problems of water and soil contamination around that area still continue even after 19 years.
