Printing `Satellite TV, piracy hit publishing cos' Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Aug. 24 HUGE decline in reading habits, spiralling cost of production, piracy, proliferation of cheap quality books and onslaught of satellite TV channels have been cutting ground from under publishing industry's feet, feels Orient Longman, a leading publishing house. "Piracy is still a big problem. Readership for books is coming down. A sizeable number of students are going for cheap quality books," Mr Easwaraiah, Manager (Higher Academics), Orient Longman, told Business Line. "The Government hasn't recognised the publishing industry. It needs to look into the problems that dog the industry," he said. Orient Longman, in association with the Academy of Library Science and Documentation (ALSD), held a meeting here bringing together librarians and publishers. "This is the first of its kind in the whole country where a private publishing agency took an initiative to organise this kind of a gathering," Mr Prakash R. Aroor, Chief Executive Officer of the publishing company, said. Dr J. Yadagiri Reddy, President of ASLD, said decreasing budget allocations and failure to fill up vacancies in libraries was having an adverse impact on academic institutions.
