Investments Gulf NRIs promise to invest $10 b in AP Our Bureau
Hyderabad , July 28 THE non-resident Indians (NRIs) in the Gulf regions have promised to pump in investments to the tune of $10 billion in a span of two years into Andhra Pradesh. "The investments will come into tourism, infrastructure, pharma and infotech sectors," Mr Khaja Quadeer Anwar, Founder Director of IDEAS (Indian Gulf Doctors, Engineers, Architects and Accountants Society) Gulf, told presspersons here on Monday. He said the Royal family of Kuwait, too, was interested in investing in India in general and Hyderabad in particular "subject to the viability of the projects". "Of the 3.2 million NRIs in the Gulf, as many as 9.5 lakh are from Andhra Pradesh. And of this, five lakh live in Saudi Arabia," he said, outlining the strengths of NRIs from the State. "This calls for establishing a separate ministry to take care of NRI affairs," he said. Mr Anwar was briefing newsmen about the upcoming `Gulf NRIs Convention and Festival' to be held in the city, in association with the Tourism Department of Andhra Pradesh. The three-day event will begin on August 3. He said the Gulf NRIs were ready to invest in the proposed airport, while proposing to set up an NRI township on the city outskirts. "We are also keen on establishing an `NRIs welfare society' for those who come back from the Gulf," he added. To be inaugurated by Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister, the NRI convention would host interactive sessions on the investment opportunities for the NRIs in the State. Mr Anwar said about 5,000 NRIs and 1,000 locals would visit the convention, where six awards will be given away to "outstanding AP NRIs in the Gulf". A 15-minute Ghar ka na ghat ka animation film, depicting the life and time of Gulf NRIs, will be screened. A slide show on NRIs contribution to India and host nations will also be presented.
