Plastic banned at Pushkaram

Rajahmundry , July 28

THE Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board, in association with voluntary organisations and green groups, has undertaken a campaign to persuade pilgrims not to pollute the Godavari with plastic waste or any other type of garbage during the Pushkaram fete which starts on Wednesday.

As lakhs of pilgrims descend on the Godavari ghats in seven districts of the State during the 12-day period, to take a dip in the river and perform the ordained rituals, the ghats become littered with polythene bags used to carry the puja materials and the bags find their way into the river, posing a threat to the fish.

"We have held a meeting with the priests, explained to them the perils of plastic waste and urged them to discourage the use of such bags," says Dr. T. Patanjali Sastry, President of the Centre for Environment here. The Board has printed pamphlets and is distributing them in the districts.
