Our Bureau

Kolkata , July 28

AT a time when the Centre is planning to extend the reliefs it announced on set-top boxes (STBs), the West Bengal Government proposes to impose a tax on STBs, the State Finance Minister, Dr Asim Kumar Dasgupta, said on Monday in the Assembly.

Moving the Taxation Bill for 2003-04, he said that Rs 793 crore was proposed to be raised during the year (as announced in the Budget) to bridge the deficit as well as to help the State tide over its financial crisis.

The Minister said that multiplexes would be given some relief in amusement tax provided they showed regional films for a month. Special export zones would also be given relief in electricity duty payments. Additional resource mobilisation would be through increased stamp duty, increased sales tax on cosmetics, cement and TV sets.
