SLEEK 'N' SMOOTH: A labourer watches as the MMTS train passes the new Hi-Tec Station in Secunderabad during a trial run on Sunday. The Rs 130-crore project is expected to considerably ease vehicular traffic in the twin cities.

Hyderabad , July 27

MR L.K. Advani, the Deputy Prime Minister, will flag off the first phase of the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) on August 9, ending a long wait for the residents of the twin cities and suburbs.

Initially, the South Central Railway (SCR) will run 20 services a day, connecting Secunderabad and Lingampally on the city outskirts.

Disclosing this at a press conference here on Saturday, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya, Minister of State for Railways, said the traffic flow on the route would be monitored and analysed so as to gauge the pattern of usage. "This will help us rejig the services to suit the needs of commuters," he said.

Mr Dattatreya, along with top officials of SCR and State Government, inspected the Secunderabad Railway Station, ahead of the launch of the MMTS services.

"Ticketing part of the MMTS was being sorted out," he said, hinting at introduction of a common ticket to allow passengers to travel in MMTS trains and buses.

Referring to the reports of surcharge on pushkaram tourists, he said the Railways had decided to waive it, keeping in view the severe drought condition in the State.

According to him, a major revamp of the Secunderabad station was underway to "remodel and modernise" it with improved passenger amenities.

"A multi-cuisine food court, advanced electronic passenger information system and an Internet cafe and a few escalators will come up at the station," he said.

Three new platforms were also being constructed with an outlay of Rs 4.75 crore. The Minister said the Railways officials were holding discussions with the State Government to take over the Gandhi Hospital building adjacent to the station.

Mr Stanley Babu, General Manager of SCR, said they were in talks with the MCH officials to sort out some "internal issues" to take care of the MMTS traffic.

"Most of the MMTS services will be spread across the 7.30 a.m.-9.30 a.m. and 4 p.m.-6.30 p.m. hours, the peak hours for the traffic. However, the trains will ply between 5 a.m. to 10.30 p.m," he said.

Earlier, the minister held discussions with Mr R.P. Singh, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of APSRTC, Ms Chitra Ramachandran, Commissioner of MCH, Mr D.T. Naik, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) and Mr Stanley Babu regarding the MMTS service.
