'Target mid-sized pharma cos in the US'

Mumbai , July 23

MERGERS and acquisitions in the Indian pharma scene are expected to speed up in the next three years. The activity will be particularly high in biotechnology industry as well, a report on healthcare by ABN Amro Bank said here on Wednesday.

Indian companies are expected to witness an immediate gain if they target mid-sized pharma companies in the US and Europe to expand their bases to the global arena as well, said Mr Ton Gardeniers, Managing Director-Global Head Healthcare, ABN-Amro. ``In the next one and a half years, the M&A activity particularly in the generic segment is set to increase. This trend will continue for a three-year time period in the biotechnology industry considering the regulatory framework and maturity of the sector in India,'' he added.

With the wave of blockbuster patent expiration slowing down post 2005, strong growth in the global pharma industry may become difficult. ``Very strong growth is expected through 2005-06. However, post 2005, growth may become difficult as size of market has become very large,'' he added.
