Tyre production up in May

TRUCK and bus tyres production staged a smart recovery in May to touch a level of 8.75 lakh tyres. Production in this category had slumped to 7.77 lakh tyres in April as against a production level of 8.99 lakh tyres recorded in March this year.

The production level in this category, which accounts for more than 70 per cent of the turnover of the domestic tyre industry, stood at 7.61 lakh tyres during May 2002. Exports of truck and bus tyres too recovered sharply in May this year to 1.86 lakh tyres as against a level of 1.24 lakh tyres in April, the latest data released by the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers' Association (ATMA) revealed. According to the ATMA data, passenger car tyre production in May surged to 7.97 lakh tyres from a level of 5.88 lakh tyres recorded in April this year. Passenger car tyre production stood at 7.46 lakh tyres in March 2003 and 6.46 lakh tyres in May 2002.
