Kochi , July 21 IN order to finetune its strategies and evolve a better model, the Thrissur-based Dhanalakshmi Bank Ltd has conducted a one-day seminar here on `Micro-credit and socio economic development' with senior Government officials and voluntary agencies. Inaugurating the function, Mr A.P. Venkateswaran, one of the directors of the bank and former Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs, said that micro-credit programme, which had become a great movement in Bangladesh, could play a major role in India in the socio economic development of a region. Women should be given a more important role in micro-credit programmes so as to increase the national wealth. The recovery rate in micro-credit schemes were high compared to non-performing assets (NPAs), which was a serious problem faced by banks these days, he added. In his presidential address, Mr S. Varadachary, one of the directors and former Joint Secretary, Finance, said that Kerala economy was not productive in the last 30 years. Successive governments in the State faltered in their policies by diverting public money to save institutions rather than saving people from penury. Mr T.K.
