Info-Tech - IT-enabled Services

And now, it's business transcription

Vinson Kurian

No previous experience of computers is necessary but excellent comprehension skills in English, disciplined work habits, strict adherence to time schedule and wide reading habits are a must.

Thiruvananthapuram , July 15

MEDICAL transcription, or even legal/revenue transcription for that matter, is passé. Business transcription is what is in.

Well, doing business increasingly demands that you move with the times. And move around, quite a bit, too, in the process. Business transcription has emerged as a major IT-enabled Service (ITES) opportunity purely from the need of businesspeople to get themselves documented during times when they take the floor in the boardroom or, for all one knows, speak out onboard a cruising aircraft.

Or ask, Mr R.P. Lalaji, Chairman and Managing Director of Seview Support Systems, a leading ITES player based in Technopark here. "For us, proceedings from sessions aboard an aircraft, an airport, on board a train, bus or a car could well mean business. And it may be about very serious subjects or just plain trivia, but they all get the same professional treatment from us. We count time in seconds," says Mr Lalaji.

Currently, Seaview Support Systems is in the need of about 100 business transcriptionists who can transcribe proceedings of business conferences, shareholders meeting, interviews of top-ranking executives of renowned companies and so on and prepare text documents on a computer. No previous experience of computers is necessary but excellent comprehension skills in English, disciplined work habits, strict adherence to time schedule and wide reading habits are a must, according to Mr Lalaji.

Selection is done on the basis of a test in English and those selected are given free training. Capable ones can start earning from the second week itself on a per line basis. Once they gain enough experience, they will be allowed to carry out the work from home over Internet. The per-line remuneration varies from around 1 to 2 paise per every character typed but according to percentage of accuracy.

Seaview Support Systems does a variety of business transcription for a number of esteemed clients in the US and the UK. Proceedings of seminars, boardroom discussions, teleconferences and so on are the routine stuff sent down for transcription. One global UK-based company captures dictations made by their customers on cellphone on an anywhere anytime basis, and Seaview sends transcripts of the same as an email within a turnaround time of a few hours.

The company regularly gets dictation in digital form over Internet at the close of office hours in the US, which is daybreak in India. The files are sent back within three to four hours to the client. Clients can have the work returned the same day as Seaview works 7x24 hours throughout the year.

Seaview Support Systems is engaged in transcription and software development related to digital sound and image conversion. The company was incorporated in 1996 and has over 150 transcriptionists with facilities to do medical, legal, and business transcription.
